The two stars of Midsomer Murders since its inception, John Nettles and Neil Dudgeon, have more than just Barnaby in common, it turns out. In recent weeks they’ve both been spotted hunting for antiques rather than clues, having both been filming for the BBC show Celebrity Antiques Road Trip.

John Nettles has been filming in the cathedral city of Wells, along with actress Barbara Flynn best known for her role in A Family At War. The pair were teamed up with antiques experts James Braxton and Christina Trevanion (both well-known from Flog It and Bargain Hunt).

Sarah Mechen from McCubbing and Redfern, the shop where John and Barbara were browsing, said: ‘Both seem very confident they will beat the other in the auction, but we will have to wait and see.’

Neil Dudgeon has been spotted a little further north, in the town of Penistone, near Huddersfield. Neil dropped in to J & B Antiques in the town. The shop’s owners John and Ben Donnachie said: ‘Although they did not purchase anything from us on this occasion, it was a great pleasure to have them here filming for their hit TV series. It will be great publicity for our newly established business and promote our lovely historic market town when it’s aired next year.’

Who knew that both our beloved Barnabies were such antique buffs? And if they really wanted a bargain, they should have tried some of the antiques shops closer to home. Southern Oxfordshire, with towns like Henley and Wallingford, is home to some quaint little antique and bric-a-brac shops. In fact, a tour of the area’s independent shops and auction houses can bring in quite a haul. So why not follow our two leads lead (if you see what we mean) and try hunting for your own bargain in the area?
